UKIE Student's #raisethegamejam Winner, November 2020 - Each Our Own (Mischievous)

UKIE Students 2020 #raisethegamejam winning entry - Each Our Own
In November 2020, myself and a team of five others took part in the UKIE Student's #raisethegamejam. The theme of the game jam was 'diversity and inclusivity'. Throughout the process of this game jam, I took on the role of both the team leader for our team called 'Mischievous' as well as being the team's only developer. I was responsible for creating the mechanics of the game, working on the UI and editing the level design in order to make it into a playable experience. My team and I would then go on to take first place.
"‘Each Our Own’ is a game about working together, not just despite our differences, but fully acknowledging them and accepting everyone’s individuality. We had a few ways we wanted to implement this, but primarily focused on the characters. They were designed in different shapes and sizes to emphasise this message. We avoided human features so they could be accessible to all kinds of gamers, without isolating anyone. That said, there was somewhat of an emphasis on the representation of differently abled people, such as designing one character with prosthetics. They also have different abilities, and all of them are needed to win the game. This was to help enforce the message that everybody is valuable and has their own merits to be proud of. For accessibility, we made the game so it would suit all age ranges, and could also be played by colour blind players, as patterns are used as well as colour ques. The main basis of the theme was the supposed Einstein quote: “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” This quote summarises the message of the game that we should not judge people by the same standards set by society, but as individuals with our own merits and experiences." -Submission description

Really good work on the post proccessing VFX, the style is great too and you can tell there was good concepting that went into it. Air movement with characters (jumping) felt a little too speedy, and there were some collision issues in certain spots but otherwise really good outcome for a 3D game under the time constraints
Thanks man, we appreciate it! We were all pretty happy with the post processing VFX, Conor did a really good job on that and the concept art that Ben and Charlotte put together was definitely a huge help. I think had this been a four day game jam, I could have really ironed out any of the issues in the level to do with polish and whatnot and we could probably have finished the model animations we had planned but overall, I'm pretty happy with the final product
